Manchester United have once again been linked with signing Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller as the struggling Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to bolster his squad this January.
The versatile German was first linked with a move to Old Trafford during Louis van Gaal‘s era and those rumours quietened down but they’ve appeared to pick up once more.
With Solskjaer saying he’s looking for a little experience this winter and Muller’s contract running out in 2021 according to Transfermarkt, it may be a match that could work out.
Here are the positions the 30 year old can play in:
Right-Wing
Even though Manchester United signed Daniel James as an option for the right-wing position, it’s quickly become clear he’s far more effective from the left-wing.
Muller doesn’t play as a traditional winger which on paper might not make sense for Solskjaer but the way he plays the role may help make an offensively struggling United more unpredictable moving forward.
The right-wing is still in need of reinforcement so why not bring in the World Cup winner as a more composed head in midfield?
Attacking-Midfield
One of Muller’s strengths is his versatility and Manchester United fans have been heavily complaining about their current options in the number ten role.
Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata have been far from impressive for various reasons and it’s clear the key to Solskjaer’s side improving in an attacking sense simply has to do with the attacking-midfield.
Muller can play as a playmaker as well as his six assists so far this season proves so he’s already an upgrade on the horribly out of form Englishman and the shockingly declining Spaniard.
Second Striker
Every now and then Solskjaer plays with a two striker formation just as he did against Liverpool with the 3-5-2 variation.
Rumours have surfaced that he’s considering playing a 4-4-2 to squeeze Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial into the same side but that would mean one injury and United are back to struggling with their forwards.
Muller would not only provide cover but he’s also proved in the past as being a very capable goalscoring second striker if given the freedom to express himself further forward.
Conclusion
Given the way the Bastian Schweinsteiger signing didn’t work out, Manchester United would be rightfully concerned with making a similar move for Muller but this isn’t quite the same scenario.
Muller is an upgrade on the current options; he’s also versatile, intelligent and capable in scoring goals and assisting.
However, the only way this would be a good deal is if he’s signed for cheap and doesn’t have extraordinary fees that United are unable to offload a few years down the line. Perhaps a loan move is a more wise option.
