Sergio Romero 6 – Made a very important save on 85 minutes from a close-range bullet header. Did not have much else to worry about.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6 – Held firm on the right hand side of a back three, using the ball well, although his attacking prowess was limited.
Phil Jones 5 – An uneasy performance to watch. The Englishman seemed panicky, hooking rather than caressing the ball. He did make a couple of important interceptions towards the end.
Harry Maguire 7 – Proper captain’s performance. Plays at a level higher than the rest of his teammates. A class defender.
Marcos Rojo 6 – Similar to Jones in his chaotic nature but looked more useful on the ball, working well with Williams.
Brandon Williams 7 – Another impressive run out for the academy player. Played with composure. His run in the leadup to United’s penalty was wonderfully direct.
James Garner 6 – Occasionally looked a bit overwhelmed under pressure but did his job, moving the ball smartly and winning loose balls.
Scott McTominay 5 – Played a senior role in midfield, putting himself about with abandon, but lacked any sense of direction in possession.
Juan Mata 6 – The Spaniard’s ball in the leadup to the penalty was top class, but his involvement in the game overall was sporadic at best.
Jesse Lingard 5 – A few encouraging moments on the ball but, much like Martial, clearly very rusty. Faded as the game went on.
Anthony Martial 6 – Certainly looked rusty on his first start since August, but returned in ideal fashion by scoring from the spot.
