Two late free kicks from Nicolas Pepe saved Arsenal from an embarrassing home defeat to Vitoria in the Europa League.

It was a fast start for the visitors to the Emirates. The Portuguese side really began on top and dominated the match in the early exchanges and had a couple of decent opportunities.

That early advantage soon became something more substantial. The former Tottenham youth player Marcus Edwards was able to cut in off the right flank and open the scoring inside eight minutes.

The visitors almost added a second when Mikel Adu was left unmarked at the back post but blazed his pass over the bar.

But The Gunners grew in influence. Lucas Torreira picked up the ball 40 yards out and whipped an incisive pass into the feet of Joe Willock. He played out wide for Kieran Tierney who laid a cross on Gabriel Martinelli’s head to level the scoreline. The Brazilian found the far corner with a wonderful header.

Just moments later and it was almost 2-1. Some good work saw Emile Smith Rowe with a shooting opportunity but his effort was deflected agonisingly wide.

It just looked like a matter of time until Arsenal went ahead but they soon found themselves behind. Ainsley Maitland-Niles conceded possession on the halfway line and Davidson struck a shot off the outside of the post. The chance looked like it was lost but Bruno Duarte followed it up to make it 2-1.

Vitoria continued to dominate the match well into the second half. Unai Emery made a double substitution at the break but it had little impact on the match as far as Arsenal were concerned.

Those midfield changes did little to save this match but Emery’s third change did just that. Nicolas Pepe was brought on for the poor Alexandre Lacazette and things soon turned around for the Gunners.

The Ivorian grabbed his first Europa League goal from a free kick wide on the right flank. Pepe whipped the ball into the far bottom corner and Arsenal were level.

Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding both missed good opportunities in the air and it looked like the game would finish level. However, Matteo Guendouzi drove the ball forward 30 yards to secure a free kick in a dangerous area.

Naturally, Pepe stepped up after his earlier success and the end result was the same. The Ivorian whipped the ball into the far top corner with one of the last kicks of the game to secure an unlikely – and undeserved – win for the Gunners.
