Gabriel Martinelli has admitted that his “heart-rate skyrocketed” when he was called upon to make his Arsenal debut against Newcastle United (via Arsenal.com).
It’s been a rapid rise for Arsenal new boy Gabriel Martinelli who has gone from the lower divisions of Brazilian football to a Premier League player in a few months.
The 18-year-old has had a really impressive start to life in North London, scoring four goals in two cup matches for the first-team.
But the Brazilian’s Arsenal career started back on the opening day of the Premier League season with a substitute appearance against Newcastle United, something which he has spoken about.
“I think the coach saw that I’d worked hard, too, because he gave me my Premier League debut at Newcastle the following month. When he called me over from the bench, I couldn’t believe it was me he was pointing at,” he told Arsenal.com.
“When I realised it was me, my heart-rate skyrocketed but then as soon as I stepped out on the pitch, I was calm. It was like second nature.
“See, football here is very different from Brazil. It’s physically demanding and a lot faster but, after my first few touches, I felt I was getting the hang of it. Even in training it’s tough. It’s rougher than Brazil because your team-mates slide tackle you and there’s no easy ride. It’s very different to what I’m used to, but I love it.
“People that know me will tell you that I always give my absolute best, so I guess, in a way, English football is well suited to me because there’s a lot of passion in the game over here.
“I’m proud that Arsenal has put its trust in me, so I will always give my all to help this team reach the top. That’s where it belongs.”
Gabriel Martinelli has made a big impact in a short space of time. The young forward looks destined for great things and there are signs that Arsenal have made a great signing. Let’s hope this is the case because he is clearly talented.
