Manchester United were reportedly uninterested in the opportunity to sign Arsenal striker Gabriel Martinelli when the Brazilian had trials at the club two years ago.
Martinelli, who joined Arsenal from Brazilian club Ituano for a fee of £6m over the summer, has already claimed four goals for Unai Emery’s side.
Man United, meanwhile, stuttered to a 0-0 draw with AZ Alkmaar on Thursday, highlighting their sheer lack of potency across the front line.
Speaking to ESPN Brasil in March, Martinelli confirmed that he had spent time at Carrington having trials at the club.
“From 2015 to 2017, I went to train there [at United] four times for around 15 days at a time,” he said.
“I asked to take pictures for [Patrice] Evra, [Marouane] Fellaini and others. [Paul] Pogba knew I was Brazilian and asked if everything was OK and where I played. We took a picture together.”
The opening day 4-0 win over Chelsea marks the one occasion in 13 games when United managed to score more than once.
Since the September international break, United have scored one Premier League goal from open play – a Scott McTominay thunderbolt against Arsenal – while Mason Greenwood is the only player to score in cup competitions for the club this term.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to stop messing around and retake that number nine role for himself.
