Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi is in the running for the 2019 Golden Boy award, being named on the final shortlist of 20 (via The Metro).
It’s a trophy which has often signalled the arrival of the next big thing in football.
The FIFA Golden Boy Award has been won by some of the best players on the planet since its inception in 2003.
Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Wayne Rooney have all lifted the trophy in the last few decades with Matthijs de Ligt the most recent winner.
Now, the final shortlist of 20 has been unveiled and Arsenal and France international Matteo Guendouzi is one of the names.
De Ligt is one of the 20 names on the list yet again and will face stiff competition from the likes of Jadon Sancho and Joao Felix.
The last Gunners player to win the award was Cesc Fabregas way back in 2006. Matteo Guendouzi deserves a lot of credit but the future is still bright for the young midfielder whether he wins this award or not. It would be a surprise to see Guendouzi named the winner with Sancho a far likelier candidate to lift the title. Perhaps Guendouzi will be in the running for PFA Young Player of the Year when the Premier League season ends next year.
