Liverpool beat Arsenal 3-1 at Anfield on an evening which could have been all so different for the Gunners.

Kick-Off (UK Time): 17:30 24/08/2019

As expected, Liverpool started on the front foot at Anfield. The home side pressed high as the Gunners looked to play the ball from the back. The centre-backs were almost playing alongside Bernd Leno at times but the Gunners weathered the early storm.

Liverpool’s full-backs were dangerous but never really threatened Bernd Leno’s goal. In fact, the best early chance came at the other end. A through ball for Pepe saw Adrian race out of the Liverpool goal and play the ball straight to Aubameyang. The Gabonese forward was 40 yards from goal but his looping shot was just wide of the far post.

Arsenal had a panic at the other end when Dani Ceballos’ clearance fell straight to Sadio Mane. Fortunately for the Gunners, the Liverpool man’s shot was saved comfortably at the other end.

Pepe was a real danger at the other end. The Ivorian was a threat and came close on a couple of occasions. First, his whipping effort just span wide of the far post before he made the best chance of the match. The former-Lille man burst past his defender and was left one-on-one with Adrian. Unfortunately, the forward’s shot was straight at the keeper.

Arsenal needed to hold out until halftime but unfortunately, they couldn’t. Alexander-Arnold swung a corner in from the right flank and Joel Matip rose highest to head home.

The second half got off to a terrible start for Arsenal when David Luiz pulled Mohamed Salah’s shirt back. The referee pointed straight to the spot and the Liverpool man converted it.

The Liverpool forward added a second and Liverpool’s third less than 15 minutes later and by then, the game was done.

The game petered out after that and it looked like just a case of how many goals Liverpool would get. The next strike, however, came at the other end. With 6 minutes left in normal time, Aubameyang slid the ball back for the substitute Lucas Torreira in the box. The Uruguay international man checked and curled the ball into the bottom corner.

Arsenal threatened late on but it wasn’t enough as the score finished 3-1.

Here’s how we rate the Arsenal players:

Bernd Leno – 6

Bernd Leno had a decent match. The German stopper made a string of solid saves and could do little about any of the Liverpool goals.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 5

It was a tough afternoon for him. Ainsley Maitland-Niles spent the vast majority of the match inside his own third, coming up against a Liverpool forward or racing to close down Andy Roberston.

David Luiz – 4

David Luiz’s good work in the first half was undone in the opening 15 minutes of the second. The former Chelsea man conceded a sloppy penalty and was left in the lurch by Salah for the second.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos – 6

Sokratis did well enough today. The former Dortmund man was strong in the air throughout but the constant pressure was just too much for him and Arsenal.

Nacho Monreal – 5

He had a tough evening down that left flank. Nacho Monreal did about as well as could be expected but it wasn’t enough.

Granit Xhaka – 4

He struggled this evening. Granit Xhaka was slow to distribute the ball and got caught by the Liverpool press on a number of occasions.

Joe Willock – 6

Joe Willock was one of the strongest performers on the pitch for Arsenal. The Englishman carried the ball out of midfield very well numerous times and showed great composure in every area of the pitch. Lots to build on for him.

Sub: Alexandre Lacazette (81′) – 6

He did well enough.

Matteo Guendouzi – 7.5

Matteo Guendouzi was probably Arsenal’s best player. The Frenchman put in an all-action performance with some excellent distribution and tireless defensive work.

Sub: Henrikh Mkhitaryan (85′) – 6

He looked sharp.

Dani Ceballos – 4

It was a tough afternoon for him. It was a completely different match for Dani Ceballos the one he enjoyed against Burnley last Sunday. He struggled to get a foot on the ball with the Liverpool midfield nipping at his heels throughout.

Sub: Lucas Torreira (61′) – 7

He made a big impact. Lucas Torreira grabbed Arsenal’s consolation goal and looked sharp throughout his cameo. He should start next week.

Nicolas Pepe – 7

It was an encouraging but frustrating performance from Nicolas Pepe. The new man showed so much promise on his first Premier League start with some blistering runs and excellent build-up play.

Still, the former Lille man will be disappointed with his evening. He had a couple of wonderful chances but failed to convert them when the score was still 0-0. It could have been a very different match if he had.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 6

He missed a couple of good opportunities but there were plenty of positives for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Still, it was a slightly frustrating one for him.
