Manchester United’s performance on Saturday vs Crystal Palace was horrendous, leaving fans frustrated with statistics pointing to a slow tempo as the source of the problem.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men lost 2-1 at home in an embarrassing display that saw some incredibly bizarre defending.
Despite the additions of Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, United found themselves conceding two incredibly soft goals with Palace scoring the opener first.
Although defensive errors was to blame for the lack of a clean-sheet, Solskjaer’s side’s inability to create anything of note was even worse with Daniel James only scoring in the 89th minute.
Though supporters blamed several underperforming players, many took their anger out on Jesse Lingard who featured in the number ten role but failed to create anything of note.
In the first half against Crystal Palace Manchester United averaged 14.57 passes per minute.
This was the slowest ball movement recorded for Man Utd in the first half of any game since the 3-1 away win against Arsenal in 2017–18.

However, as the stat above mentions, it was the Red Devils’ overall slow tempo that meant it was incredibly easy for Crystal Palace to defend and secure all three points.
Top teams can make silly defensive mistakes from time to time but at least they would create enough chances to make up for it or turn around the result.
However, Manchester United remained a shadow of themselves having started the season inconsistently despite having enjoyed an incredible pre-season.
