Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has revealed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer consulted him over the purchase of Daniel James.
The young Welshman was bought for a reported £15m fee from Swansea and was the former Molde manager’s first signing.
James arrived at Old Trafford as a relative unknown but his performances over pre-season were impressive with fans quickly warming up to him.
To make matters even better, the pacy winger scored on his debut against Chelsea after he made the most of his cameo appearance.
Even against Wolves in his full debut, James’ high work-rate endeared him to fans even if he didn’t enjoy the same success as he did in his previous match.
According to Manchester Evening News, Giggs said: “Yeah, Ole asked me about him. I just told him that he’s a player with plenty of potential, obviously really quick.
“A great lad, someone who you want in the dressing room, great character. So yeah, especially for the money it was a no brainer really because he is a big talent, and since Christmas he’s just got better and better and better.
“I watched him a lot for Swansea last year and he could rip nearly every full-back in that division apart. So he’s just got better and better over the last six or seven months.
“From a standing start he is quick and he will beat anyone. It’s just that like any other young winger, the finishing touches, that final ball, scoring more goals, which he will get better at.”
It’s probably safe to say James is the most raw talent of the three signings Solskjaer made with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire seamlessly slotting into the starting XI.
The former Swansea man appears to need more time than his new teammates to adjust and develop before he can truly take the Premier League by storm.
In fairness to him, he’s also the only one of the three signings who wasn’t a regular Premier League performer before and so he was always going to need time to adjust to a higher level.
