Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has urged his boyhood club to take advantage of any slips in quality from rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.
The now pundit believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s youthful team can grow together successfully and potentially be ready to challenge in two years time if surrounding circumstances change to their advantage.
United’s starting XI seem to be of top four quality but in terms of squad depth, there doesn’t seem to be much quality with the match against Wolves evidence of that.
Solskjaer’s men were drawing 1-1 with the stubborn home side but he could only call upon Juan Mata, Andreas Pereira and Mason Greenwood- none of whom are significant game changers.
It’s clear the Red Devils are in transition however, with legendary Norwegian still working on shaping the squad in his image.
According to Sky Sports, Neville said: “I like this team a lot more. I look at the team and they all want to be at the club – perhaps Paul Pogba has aspirations to leave the club and play elsewhere.
“But he’s settled down. It’s a team that’s got energy and youth – I like it. It’s not slow or boring. They are having a go.
“It needs two or three senior additions that will make them really good but if that team can grow together.
“They are not going to take over City in the next 12-18 months but when Pep Guardiola leaves City and if Liverpool don’t recruit as well as they have done, then Manchester United must be ready to pounce.
“And if this develops, they’ve got a big chance of doing something in two years’ time.”
If backed financially and given time, there are signs Solskjaer will get it all right and lead Manchester United to glory.
Although it’s early days, all three of the former Molde man’s signings have already appeared to be solid pieces of business.
United have bought big in the past with players failing to live up to their reputations or price-tags.
However, under Solskjaer they’ve appeared to at least have addressed some weaknesses whilst having the new players integrate quickly and performing well.
