Frank Lampard could be named Chelsea’s new manager this summer, due mainly to a lack of alternatives, report the Telegraph.
The Chelsea legend impressed in his maiden managerial season in 2018/19, taking Derby County to the Championship playoff final.
Despite losing to Aston Villa at Wembley, the 40-year-old still caught the eye, emerging as one of the country’s most highly thought of young coaches.
With Maurizio Sarri heading to Juventus after an up-and-down year at Stamford Bridge, Lampard is the overriding favourite to be named as his successor.
This latest report claims that he may end up being hired earlier than had been initially planned, because of a lack of other options.
Chelsea’s plan was to approach Lampard after more than a year at Derby, allowing him to grow as a manager.
A number of the Blues’ targets “could prove to be out of reach” this summer, however, including Erik ten Hag and Massimiliano Allegri.
Lampard’s appointment would go down well with supporters, though, and would be “welcomed” by a collection of talented young players at the club.
