Manchester United’s chances of signing Leicester City defender Harry Maguire have been boosted by Manchester City balking at his £80m price tag, according to reports.
The defender, who has enjoyed two magnificent seasons at the top level, received acute interest from Man United last summer but decided to stay put at Leicester. Jose Mourinho reportedly expressed anger at the club’s scouts for failing to spot his ability earlier.
Maguire remains firmly on United’s radar, although last summer’s target Kalidou Koulibaly is reportedly the club’s preference. A move for the Napoli man, however, does not seem likely.
According to the Mail‘s Chris Wheeler, United’s pursuit of Maguire has been boosted by Man City – who need to sign a Vincent Kompany replacement – pulling out of the race. The Premier League champions believe a figure closer to £50m is a more accurate valuation for Maguire, while United are prepared to make a bid closer to Leicester’s original price.
The 26-year-old England international perfectly fits the bill for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who wants to sign fresh English talent to serve as the backbone of his rebuild at Old Trafford. Prizing him away from Leicester – whose owners are no rollovers like, say, Crystal Palace – will be a very tall order.
