Chelsea will enquire about Mauricio Pochettino if they pip rivals Tottenham to the final Champions League spot this season.
It is widely expected that Antonio Conte will depart Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, leaving Chelsea to hunt for a new manager. While Luis Enrique and Thomas Tuchel are two names who have been heavily linked, the Telegraph claim that Pochettino would be the Blues’ first choice.
Although they are aware that there is little chance of convincing Pochettino to turn his back on Spurs for their rivals, Chelsea would at least enquire about his availability.
However, to do so they will need to secure Champions League qualification, because whereas Enrique or Tuchel may not be put off with a fifth place finish, it would most likely rule out Pochettino completely.
Pochettino still has three years to run on his current deal with Spurs, having signed a five-year contract in 2016. However, reports earlier this year have suggested that Spurs are readying a new bumper contract to stave off outside interest in their manager.
At the tail end of last year, the 46-year old Argentine said he would sign a 15-year deal with Tottenham if he was offered it, such does he enjoy being with the club. Therefore, it may be difficult for Chelsea to tempt him away.
