Eden Hazard’s move to Real Madrid moved much closer last night as Chelsea and Real Madrid agreed an £88.5m transfer fee for the Belgian according to the Guardian.
It’s news which has been coming for Chelsea and their fans as the Belgian openly expressed his desire to move to Spain. Even going as far as saying his goodbyes to the fans after the club’s Europa League final thumping of Arsenal.
The fee could yet rise with potential add-ons ensuring Chelsea receive a fair deal.
Hazard, who entered the final year of his contract this month was unlikely to see out the remainder of it with the Blues after rejecting multiple extension offers from the club. Leaving his employers with two options cash in on their star playmaker or leave the player unhappy and lose him on a free a year from now and have substantial implications in relation to Financial Fair Play rules.
For Chelsea, preparing for life without Hazard could be difficult. The club are about to serve a transfer ban lasting two windows after an appeal to the charge was rejected by FIFA meaning a replacement for Hazard must come from within the club.
One positive is Callum Hudson-Odoi is likely to reject any advances from German champions Bayern Munich and sign a new deal with the Londoners giving him a fantastic opportunity to show the club his quality.
