Jose Mourinho hailed Manchester United’s ‘engine’ Paul Pogba as he returned from a long-term injury at the weekend.
Pogba scored one of Man United’s four goals in a thumping 4-1 dismantling of Newcastle United.
The midfielder put in a world-class performance, treating United fans to an immediate reminder of his quality.
“He different class,” Mourinho admitted. “[It was] what we had in the beginning of the season with Paul and [Nemanja] Matic, growing up together and being like the engine of the team.”
“We lost a bit of that because, while other players are good players, they have different qualities,” Mourinho explained to BT Sport after the game.
“I left it in Paul’s hands as to how long he played. We made that decision [to replace him] at a good time – it was a great performance from him.”
Pogba went immediately down the tunnel after playing roughly 70 minutes in his first action since a hamstring injury suffered in September’s 3-0 UEFA Champions League won against FC Basel.
He stopped only to see Romelu Lukaku’s fourth goal go in. Pogba himself had scored earlier, and had set up Anthony Martial’s equaliser with wonderful footwork, and brilliant vision and patience on the edge of the box.
United had a cutting edge again with Pogba back.
