Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette starred as the Gunners progressed to the final of the Europa League.

Team News – Player Ratings – Match Highlights
Match: Valencia (1) v (3) Arsenal
Stadium: Mestalla Stadium, Valencia
Kick-Off (UK Time): 20:00 09/05/2019

It was Arsenal’s biggest match in some time as the Gunners took a 3-1 lead to Valencia in a Europa League semi-final. There was more than a feeling of deja vu with the Gunners making a twin trip to Spain to take on Atletico Madrid at this stage last season.

Things started poorly in that match and even worse in this match. The Gunners found themselves behind within 11 minutes. Unai Emery’s side were caught high up the pitch after a counter as Kevin Gameiro found himself in free space to finish off a deflected cross.

Arsenal fans were naturally concerned. The Gunners’ away record is infamous at the moment and there was little to suggest that was about to change. The home side took advantage of Arsenal’s nerves and continued to press forward in search of the crucial second goal.

But that second goal would come for the visitors. A simple long shot went uncleared as Alexandre Lacazette won the second ball to head on to his strike partner. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang took it in his stride before whipping the half-volley into the far corner of the net.

Arsenal’s nerves seemed to settle. They regained control of the ball in midfield but it was the Gunners’ strikers who really threatened. Aubameyang almost turned provider for his partner when he burst down the right and cut it back for Lacazette who could only clip the post with his shot.

Halftime came and went with the next goal being a crucial one. Fortunately, it came the way of Arsenal as, once again, their strikers shone. Aubameyang drove forward and found Lucas Torreira. The midfielder fed it into Lacazette down the left who span brilliantly past two defenders before finishing well.

2-1 on the night made it 5-2 on aggregate. The home side needed to score four goals to progress but that number soon went down to three. Kevin Gameiro once again took advantage of some sloppy defending down Arsenal’s flanks to tap home from a cross.

But the natural order was soon restored. Ainsley Maitland-Niles put in some great work down the right flank before sliding a wonderful cross into the six-yard box. As is usually the case, Aubameyang wasn’t far away from the effort as he finished off the chance to make it 6-3 on aggregate.

It wasn’t long before Aubameyang got his well-deserved third goal. The Gabon striker linked up well with Matteo Guendouzi on the edge of the box before playing a fine one-two with Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the box. The forward even had time to look up for his strike partner before powering a strike into the top corner of the net to send the Gunners to the final.

Here’s how we rate the Arsenal players:

Petr Cech – 5

Petr Cech was very much a spectator this evening. The Czech stopper didn’t make too many saves of note but could do little about either goal.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 7.5

As often seems to be the case for the youngster, Ainsley Maitland-Niles started slowly but really grew into the match. The Englishman was a little sloppy before the break but improved as it went on. Maitland-Niles deserves particular credit for his assist for the Gunners’ crucial third goal.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos – 6.5

Not his best match but Sokratis did well enough. The Greek defender was involved and did everything expected of him.

Laurent Koscielny – 6.5

Another solid enough performance from Laurent Koscielny at the back.

Nacho Monreal – 7

He can be pleased enough. Nacho Monreal was Arsenal’s best defender for much of the match but did go to sleep a couple of times. The Spaniard deserves some blame for both of Valencia’s goals.

Sead Kolasinac – 6

He wasn’t the best Arsenal player on the pitch tonight. Sead Kolasinac was a little lapse defensively and draws some criticism for the second Valencia goal.

Sub: Shkodran Mustafi (70′) – 6

He was fine.

Granit Xhaka – 6.5

He grew into it. Granit Xhaka started slowly but saw more and more of the ball as the match progressed. The Swiss midfielder was slow to get back for the opening goal but seemed to work extra hard to atone for his errors.

Lucas Torreira – 6.5

Much like his midfield partner, Lucas Torreira improved as this contest went on. The Uruguayan can be pleased enough.

Sub: Matteo Guendouzi ( 79′) – 7

A solid cameo from the Frenchman. Matteo Guendouzi looked comfortable and confident.

Mesut Ozil – 6

It was a decent performance from Mesut Ozil. He drifted in and out of the match slightly but strung some good passes together and found the spaces he needed to.

Sub: Henrikh Mkhitaryan (61′) – 5

Barring that assist for the fourth goal, Henrikh Mkhitaryan had a woeful cameo. The Armenian didn’t look up for it and lost the ball on numerous occasions before sliding one through for Aubameyang to complete his hat-trick.

Alexandre Lacazette – 9

But for the heroics of his strike partner, this was a man of the match-quality performance from Alexandre Lacazette. The Frenchman worked hard and held up the ball extremely well in the attacking third. The former Lyon man grabbed his goal and was unfortunate not to add another.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 10

This was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s best performance in an Arsenal shirt and one of the best of any Gunners player in some time. The forward grabbed a hat-trick but it was the rest of his game which shone through. He just looked sharper than every other player on the pitch as he effortlessly burst past defenders. Aubameyang worked extremely hard and could be seen inside his own defensive third when his services were required. Incredible night from him.
