Former Manchester United goalkeeper and current Ajax CEO Edwin Van der Sar has provided an update on Matthijs de Ligt’s future amid reports of a move to Barcelona.
The youngster is one of Europe’s highly rated prospects, particularly after his showing for his side in the Champions League.
The Eredivisie giant managed to reach the semi-finals of Europe’s elite competition, eventually losing to Tottenham having thrown away a 3-0 lead.
De Ligt is expected to leave the Netherlands with Barcelona reportedly the club who will sign him.
However, United’s interest in the defender is no secret and Van der Sar has given them a little hope with his latest statement.
According to Manchester Evening News, Edwin said:”I think these will be De Ligt’s final games with Ajax.
“But I hope he goes out on a high. He’s been here since he was a child and will end up at a big club. I think he’ll go to England or Spain.”
Matthijs could probably have the pick of whatever club he wants to go to in Europe given the attention he’s rightfully receiving.
Whoever signs the defender has a solid centre-back for the next decade even if he doesn’t improve any further.
There’s hardly any players who could compete with that let alone compete with him directly in terms of pure quality.
On paper Manchester United would struggle to sign him given the lack of Champions League football but Van der Sar’s words are encouraging.
It is a little confusing however as it has been reported that De Ligt turned down an offer from the club just days ago.
