It was the final Premier League match of the season at Turf Moor and neither side had much to play for. The final finishes of both Burnley and Arsenal were effectively assured before kick off and few eyes were on this match.
But it was a swift start to proceedings. Both sides came close in the first half but the Gunners came closer. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had one effort saved and probably should’ve added to his 20 league goals this season inside the opening 20 minutes.
Burnley pushed back after the opening half-hour and nearly broke the deadlock when James Tarkowski headed a good opportunity well wide. Both sides hit the woodwork during the first half but went into the break level at 0-0.
Arsenal came out with a new impetus after the break. The Gunners started to move the ball quicker as Matteo Guendouzi started to see more of the ball. However, the opening goal came from a Burnley error.
A loose pass fell for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who burst clear of the Burnley backline. The former Dortmund man always looked likely to score and did just that as he slotted the ball into the far corner, his 30th goal of the season.
Just moments later and it was 2-0. Alex Iwobi found space in the box and had the calm to spin and get his head up. He clipped a ball to the back post where Aubameyang found enough space to smash a volley into the far corner of the net.
The Gunners were flying but it didn’t last. Burnley pressed forward at the other end and forced a fine save from Bernd Leno. But the visitors didn’t clear their lines and the ball came back in for Ashley Barnes to head home.
Aubameyang was one goal away from the Premier League Golden Boot and really should have grabbed another to secure his hat-trick. The Gabon striker steered the ball wide of the post from just 4 yards out after a fine cross from Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Substitute Eddie Nketiah added a third in injury time as Arsenal secured the result and three points.
Here’s how we rate the Arsenal players:
Bernd Leno – 6.5
Bernd Leno did well enough. The German produced a couple of good saves and even had one memorable outfield moment in his own corner flag in the second half.
Stephan Lichtsteiner – 6.5
Stephan Lichtsteiner played well on his final appearance for Arsenal. The Swiss defender battled well enough but his crossing and passing in the final third was a little lacking.
Dinos Mavropanos – 6
A decent 30 minutes from Dinos Mavropanos. The Greek defender was solid enough and it was a shame to see him leave the field early.
Sub: Laurent Koscielny (34′) – 6.5
Another solid performance from Laurent Koscielny. He can’t have expected to play today but did well enough coming off the bench.
Shkodran Mustafi – 7.5
Shkodran Mustafi impressed this afternoon. He was Arsenal’s best defender on the day and looked solid throughout. His long passing was a little off but there are few complaints defensively.
Nacho Monreal – 6.5
He was fine. A decent afternoon for him.
Mohamed Elneny – 6
Mohamed Elneny did well enough. It could be the Egyptian’s final performance in an Arsenal shirt so it was good to see him get the 90 minutes.
Matteo Guendouzi – 7.5
Matteo Guendouzi did well. The young Frenchman looked up for from the off but didn’t really start playing until after the break. Guendouzi dominated in the second half and can be pleased with his afternoon.
Joe Willock – 6
A tough one for Joe Willock. He had a few flashes on the ball but looked a little lacking in confidence.
Sub: Eddie Nketiah (62′) – 7
Eddie Nketiah struggled to really make an impression on the match for much of his 30 minutes on the pitch. However, he did well in stoppage time to grab his goal.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 6.5
Henrikh Mkhitaryan improved as the match went on. The Armenian is another one who could be playing his final match for the club given the political situation. He can be reasonably pleased with his efforts.
Alex Iwobi – 8
It was a game of two halves for Alex Iwobi. The Nigeran international was pretty poor before halftime and excellent after it. Iwobi was bright and lively in the final 45 and notched up another assist for Aubameyang’s second goal.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 8
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wanted to get goals this afternoon and he did just that. The Gabon striker looked up for it and showcased his finishing ability on what was a memorable afternoon for him. A solid performance from him.
