David de Gea 5 – Made a couple of acrobatic save but saw yet another penalty go past him. Hasn’t saved one since April 2016.
Ashley Young 4 – He cannot be Manchester United’s first choice full-back next season. Like Gary Neville in 2011, the Englishman needs to realise his time is up.
Phil Jones 5 – Produced a shaky performance at the back and then went off injured. Vintage Phil Jones.
Chris Smalling 5 – Nowhere to be seen for Cardiff’s second, wasteful in possession, and too slow generally. Amazing to think that this man is United’s most ‘dependable’ central defender.
Diogo Dalot 5 – Gave away a penalty in the first half, although he did win the ball. Nonetheless, his decision making was poor.
Scott McTominay 4 – Lacked impetus from the base of midfield and then moved back to central defence after half time. Completely lost his man in the lead-up to Cardiff’s second.
Andreas Pereira 5 – Worked hard to inject some dynamism into the middle but never looked assured when moving the ball along, with so few options available.
Paul Pogba 4 – Just did not look bothered today. Spent too much time on the ball and did nothing with it for the most part.
Jesse Lingard 4 – A few lively bursts down the middle but, on the whole, utterly ineffective. The Englishman has been awful since his injury in February.
Marcus Rashford 5 – Much like Lingard, the youngster lacked any real potency. Needs a rest more than most.
Mason Greenwood 7 – The only spark for Manchester United on another flat day. Buzzed down that right channel and carved out some good openings. Should have taken a couple of very good chances.
Substitutes
Anthony Martial 6 – Only the Frenchman and Greenwood can be pleased with their application today. Looked to create openings and make things happen.
