Chelsea man admits he wants to feature more often next season

Chelsea second-choice goalkeeper Willy Caballero insists he is happy to remain as Kepa Arrizabalaga’s back-up next season, although he admits he does want to play more.

The 37-year old is one of the most experienced players in the Chelsea squad, and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future after signing a contract extension on Wednesday.

Last season, Caballero briefly displaced Kepa as first-choice after a controversial moment in the Carabao Cup final, where the Spaniard refused to be substituted with Caballero waiting to come on.

Kepa was dropped for the following Premier League game against Tottenham, but was restored for the very next fixture against Fulham. Talking about his place in Chelsea’s squad, Caballero claims he is happy to continue backing up Kepa, although he admits he wants to feature more often.

As reported by Football.London, Caballero said:

My role as a second goalkeeper is to create a good atmosphere training with Kepa because he has to play every single game.

I try to help achieve the best level of Kepa, but also my best level to be ready in case anything happens. Also because I want to play, I don’t want to be on the bench.

I am in a good team but as you know the Premier League is so complicated, played at such a high level, that to be ready for every game we must have great competition during the week.

Caballero also admitted that his experience has proved important in the dressing room, with the Argentina international willing to help young outfield players when required. He continued:

As an experienced player I have to do a little bit more inside the changing room.

The season is very long and when bad moments appear we have to appear too to help the team to be focused on the next game, or to help the young players be ready.

I am not talking about just me, I’m talking about all the experienced players we have in the changing room. We help a lot Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ethan Ampadu and the other young players.
