Ajax captain Matthjis de Ligt remains open to the prospect of joining Manchester United this summer, according to the Telegraph.
The 19-year-old was Ajax’s driving force in a historic 2018/19 campaign during which they won the Eredivisie and came – quite literally – seconds away from reaching their first Champions League final for a generation. A jewel from Ajax’s endless conveyor belt of dynamic young talent, he is expected to follow in the footsteps of teammate Frenkie De Jong, who has joined Barcelona, and move to a big club in the summer.
Indeed, the Nou Camp remains De Ligt’s most likely destination amid a torrent of interest from Europe’s top clubs. Man United, having failed to qualify for the Champions League, may feel as if the Dutchman is beyond their grasp, but sources close to the player have suggested a move to Manchester could be on the cards.
According the Telegraph‘s Luke Edwards, the idea of being central to United’s rebuild appeals to the teenager, whose leadership at such a young age is arguably even more valuable than his exceptional ability. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team ended the season by failing to keep a clean sheet for 15 games in a row. There would be something unique – something truly grand – about this particular challenge at Old Trafford.
United are looking for personalities as opposed to merely big names and De Ligt’s combination of youthful vitality and stirring leadership makes the defender an ideal option. He will make a decision over his future after the UEFA Nations League in June.
