Zinedine Zidane is in pole position to take over from Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, with staff believing the Portuguese’s departure from Old Trafford is an inevitability, according to reports.
Mourinho’s position at the club became even more tenuous after a performance against West Ham United which felt even more diabolical than the League Cup defeat to Derby County.
Ed Woodward, however, remains reluctant to pull the trigger due to the complications of installing a new manager midway through the season, but results may end up leaving him with no choice.
And according to the Telegraph’s James Ducker, those behind the scenes at Old Trafford are convinced Mourinho’s days are numbers and Zidane, who left Real Madrid in the summer, believes he will be offered the job once the 55-year-old is finally relieved from his duties at Man United.
The club recently stressed that no contact had been made with Zidane, who is reportedly already taking English lessons, but last season’s Champions League winner feels like the only concrete option for United if results continue to free-fall.
Zidane’s calming, sagely influence would provide a welcome antidote to the growingly acidic Mourinho but it remains an open question whether he is a long-term solution for a club which needs to undergo serious structural changes.
