Maurizio Sarri is “hanging on by a thread” at Chelsea, according to former Blues defender Tony Dorigo.
The Italian has suffered a mixed first season at Stamford Bridge, with the negatives outweighing the positives.
Although an excellent start to the campaign was made, Sarri has lost his way as it has progressed.
Sunday’s 2-0 defeat away to Everton was the latest disappointing result for Chelsea, who are now in a fight to seal a top-four finish.
The prospect of missing out on Champions League football again is a bleak one for Blues supporters, and would almost certainly cost Sarri his job.
The former Napoli boss is walking on thin ice as it is, however, and Dorigo told the Evening Standard that he is perilously close to being axed:
When Maurizio Sarri came, I looked at what he did at Napoli and Empoli. The style was fantastic.
Obviously the Premier League is different but even so you saw certain parts of Chelsea coming together and then it all fell apart again. It’s about results.
You’ve got to get them. Do Chelsea deserve to be in the top couple? Probably not. But after that they really should be knocking on that door.
They are just dropping off the pace and what we know about the owner [Roman Abramovich] is that he does not suffer fools gladly.
When he thinks the time is right, they are gone. He’s hanging on by a thread.
Some reporters have even claimed that Sarri will be relieved of his duties during the current international break, although that appears unlikely.
Up next is a trip to struggling Cardiff City on March 31st, in what is surely a must-win game for him.
