Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made it impossible for vice-executive chairman Ed Woodward to ignore him according to Rio Ferdinand.
The Norwegian took over from Jose Mourinho in December as caretaker manager with great success, remaining unbeaten in the Premier League since.
Solskjaer’s short reign so far has included famous victories over Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham whilst playing an attacking brand the fans have sorely missed.
Ferdinand believes the former Molde man has done such a good job it’s now impossible to not hand him the position permanently.
The initial expectation was that Ole was going to come in, improve the atmosphere while the board attempt to replace Mourinho with a top manager such as Massimo Allegri or Zinedine Zidane.
According to the Daily Mail, Rio said: “He [Woodward] takes him [Solskjaer] on. He can’t do anything else. Ole has put himself in a position where he can’t be told no. He has forced Ed Woodward’s hand.
“At the time (of his appointment) Ed Woodward probably thought: ‘I’m going to get him as a stop-gap’ and I was of the same thinking.
“When Ole signed I wasn’t standing there jumping and saying: ‘This is the best signing we’ve got, brilliant, I’m delighted with this.”‘ But I wasn’t saying ‘He’s rubbish’.
“I was saying: ‘This is someone who knows the place, who can re-stabilise the place.’
“But I didn’t expect him — and Ed Woodward wouldn’t have either — to do what he has done. He has exceeded everyone’s expectations and has made it nigh on impossible for anyone to say no.”
At this point Manchester United fans would probably riot if Solskjaer wasn’t handed the job permanently.
The former striker was already a fan-favourite but now that he’s excelled as their manager as well, his status has arguably grown.
United haven’t really ever had the fortune of one of their own players returning to the club to succeed as a manager in the sense that the likes of Barcelona or Real Madrid have.
Supporters have grown even more fond of Ole and they certainly wish the ride isn’t over just yet.
