There are so many things that happened in 2018 for Chelsea including the arrival of Maurizio Sarri and the dramatic story of Thibaut Courtois.
As we are here in 2019, here are some things that Chelsea fans could wish for this year.
- Solve Hazard’s contract ASAP
The time is running out for Chelsea as Hazard, who has only 18 months left, does not want to commit his future. Arguably the best player in Chelsea’s squad right now, it is sensible that Chelsea wants to secure their best player in a long-term contract. Maurizio Sarri even jumped into the discussion when he suggested the winger should decide his future as soon as possible. While no other wingers are good enough to fill his shoes, it is understandable why Sarri is desperate to keep him in his squad this season. Not to ignore Pedro and Willian, but in their 30’s, it is simply not a good idea to rely on them while the club is trying to move forward with younger squads. Obviously, the best scenario is to keep Hazard and tie him to a long contract. However, if Hazard decides to make his move to Real Madrid, it is important for the club to start a new plan to build their future since the Premier League is becoming tougher each season.
- Start to trust youngsters
In many occasions, the reality slaps Chelsea while seeing other clubs taste the performances that Chelsea wish to have from their former players. De Bruyne, Lukaku, and Salah are some of the players that moved on without having a proper chance to prove themselves in Chelsea. For now, they have Andreas Christensen and Callum Hudson-Odoi who are ready to make their steps into Sarri’s first-team. As Barcelona are sniffing around Christensen and Bayern Munch ready to snap Callum Hudson-Odoi, there are no reasons to not play them regularly this season while David Luiz is not reliable enough in defence and Pedro and Willian are ageing. In the worst case, if they finally move away from Chelsea, the club will only blame themselves.
- Find a new frontman
Since the misfiring Morata is likely to leave the club, whether it be, this transfer window or next season and Giroud is not good enough to fill the starting line-up each week, especially against the top six, it is essential to sign a new striker. Chelsea is often too reliant on Hazard. The 3-1 loss against Tottenham and win over Watford are the clear evidence that the dependence of Chelsea to Hazard is not good for Chelsea to compete in the Premier League. Having a reliable striker will take the weight off Hazard’s shoulder.
