Solskjaer praises Man United midfielder after Brighton win and it's not who you think

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reserved special praise for Ander Herrera after the 2-1 win over Brighton on Saturday.

The Spaniard featured in the usual midfield three which has proven so successful so far, starring alongside Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba.

The trio compliment each other well and while the Serbian and Frenchman were impressive, Solskjaer made it a point to hail Herrera’s influence.

Louis van Gaal was the man to bring in Herrera from Atletico Bilbao but Jose Mourinho placed a lot of faith in him as well.

The former Molde boss appears to be doing the same and his faith has been repaid by the tenacious midfielder.

According to the club’s official website, Ole said: “Ander is a midfielder who is a bit different to Paul [Pogba] and to Nemanja [Matic] with their physical attributes.

“He runs and runs. He runs with the ball and plays it simple. He also makes some good runs into the box, although we let Paul do more of that job and Ashley [Young] maybe from the right-hand side, but I’ll never stop him making runs into the box and, hopefully, he’ll continue making them like he does.”

As Solskjaer says, Ander has added some dynamism to his play and isn’t just carrying out his usual ball-winning role.

Fans witnessed for the first time in a while the former Atletico Bilbao star receiving passes on the turn and playing in the attackers during the win over Brighton.

Herrera is a bit of an all-rounder but his energy and work-rate has often meant he’s tasked with hunting down the opposition.

Nonetheless, his role alongside Nemanja is crucial to allowing Pogba the freedom to roam and dismantle opposition defences.

The two midfielder’s have had their fair share of praise and it was about time Ander received some of his own.
