Antonio Valencia wants to remain at Manchester United until the summer even if they do not extend his contract beyond this season, according to reports.
Man United have not yet triggered an extension clause on the 33-year-old’s contract which would keep him at the club until the summer of 2020.
The Ecuadorian right-back has only made one appearance under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and finds himself down the pecking order, with Ashley Young and Diogo Dalot both preferred ahead of him.
According to the Times‘ Paul Hirst, Valencia wants to end his career at Old Trafford at the end of next season, but it seems unlikely that this will happen. That United have granted contract extensions to Ashley Young, Ander Herrera and Juan Mata in recent times, yet not Valencia, could be instructive.
A more likely option, therefore, seems to be Valencia leaving for free this summer. Inter Milan have reportedly expressed interest in signing the right-back, with some reports claiming talks over a deal have already begun.
You certainly get the impression that Valencia’s days as the club’s first choice right-back have reached the ‘end-game’ stage. Those at United know full well that Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot resemble the future.
