Lyon will attempt to sign Olivier Giroud from Chelsea this summer, the club’s President, Jean-Michel Aulas, has confirmed.
The 32-year-old has endured a frustrating season at Stamford Bridge, scoring just five times in 27 appearances.
Only one of those has come in the Premier League and the arrival of Gonzalo Higuain could push him further down the pecking order.
A move away from Chelsea at the end of the season appears likely, potentially bringing an end to Giroud’s stint in the Premier League.
Speaking to Le Figaro, Aulas was not shy about discussing possible interest in the France World Cup winner, saying Lyon are keen to sign him:
I dreamed of bringing him in last summer and I even called Arsene Wenger to get his opinion, someone like Gérard Houllier knows him well too.
We had discussions when I was in Moscow with the French national team during the World Cup.
Things were not possible, on his side. Today we have an attack that is well stocked. If someone in front left, then a deal could interest us, especially because he has a different profile compared to our players.
This summer, of course Giroud will interest me, it seems a little tight for this winter. We do not want to overload with attackers, especially as we have a real team.
Aside from that, we will have to see what manager we have at that moment of the season, but I like this boy. He is a good guy.
Giroud could be in action when Chelsea visit Bournemouth on Wednesday night, as they look to strengthen their hold on fourth place.
The Frenchman is likely to have to settle for a place on the substitutes’ bench, however, with Higuain making his first-ever Premier League start.
