Anthony Martial is ‘close’ to agreeing a new five-year deal with Manchester United following a ‘significant’ breakthrough in negotiations between his representatives and club officials over the last two weeks, according to ESPN‘s Rob Dawson.
The Frenchman looked set to leave over the summer following a nightmare six months under Jose Mourinho, who was reportedly open to selling him in order to sign Willian from Chelsea.
Talks were initially stymied by Martial’s concern at the arrival of Alexis Sanchez, but his impressive performances this season, both under Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has changed his outlook on Man United, which suddenly feels like a good place to be after a prolonged spell of gloom.
According to Dawson, sources at United have revealed that negotiations had taken a significant step forward over the last couple of weeks, with the club confident an agreement will be reached shortly.
French media outlet Telefoot has even claimed an announcement could be made this week. Nothing is confirmed yet, of course, but you can sense it lingering on the horizon. Enough media outlets have reported the story to distinguish it from the usual baseless ‘rumours’ which circulate indefinitely.
Finally, after such a protracted spell on uncertainty, we are slowly but surely heading towards a definite stance: Martial is staying at United.
