Unai Emery has explained his thinking behind the substitution of Alexandre Lacazette for Aaron Ramsey during Tuesday’s 4-1 win over Fulham (via Arsenal.com).
One of the most common complains from Arsenal fans about former manager Arsene Wenger was the Frenchman’s use of substitutions.
They either came too late or were too ineffective for many Arsenal supporters but it seems as if the complaints have continued despite the change in management.
Unai Emery was booed when he swapped out Alexandre Lacazette for Aaron Ramsey on Tuesday, a substitution which he explained after the match.
“I understand the supporters. I need to do my work,” Emery insisted after the game.
“Tactically, we are thinking that in this moment we needed to change to get more balance. Above all else, we know Seri very well and we needed to get a player close to him, to not let him play with the ball very easily.
“When Aaron Ramsey came onto the pitch, he could do that and can also help us in attacking moments and he scored. The reason for the decision was this and I need to do my work.
“Every supporter can think different things tactically, but for me today, Lacazette worked very well today, scored and he helped us. His reaction was very positive.”
Unai Emery’s substitution was certainly justified with Arsenal achieving far more control over the match after it. Alexandre Lacazette put in a good performance but it was absolutely the right decision to swap him out for Aaron Ramsey.
