Chelsea are considering making a surprise Deadline Day move for Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure, according to the Mirror.
The 26-year-old played no part in the Hornets’ 2-1 defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday evening, with manager Javi Gracia claiming he has a knee injury.
Chelsea are big admirers, however, and the report states Maurizio Sarri sees him as a possible replacement for Cesc Fabregas, who moved to Monaco earlier this month.
Doucoure’s future has previously been up in the air, after he admitted a move to Paris Saint-Germain would be a dream.
The Ligue 1 giants are attempting to sign Everton’s Idrissa Gueye, however, making a move to Parc des Princes unlikely for the Watford man.
Whether or not Chelsea’s interest is concrete remains to be seen, but time is running out for them to complete a move.
The January deadline is at 11pm (GMT) on Thursday night.
The Blues suffered a shock 4-0 loss at Bournemouth on Wednesday, throwing Sarri’s future into doubt.
