David de Gea 6 – Only had to make one meaningful save when the game was competitive and it was a sensational one, leaping to his right to push away Laurent Depoitre’s curling strike from a corner. Could do nothing about Huddersfield’s late consolation from close range.
Diogo Dalot 6 – Looks like a settled figure at Old Trafford, bombing down the pitch and attacking the ball at will. Brings a superb level of energy. Could have been tidier on the ball at times – missed a golden chance to double Manchester United’s lead.
Phil Jones 7 – There were times when Man United looked vulnerable from set-pieces but Jones was a calming figure, timing his defensive headers and clearances nicely.
Victor Lindelof 7 – Once again elegant in possession, moving the ball to the midfield quickly, and provided an assist for Matic.
Luke Shaw 7 – Another very solid performance out on the left from Shaw, who is clearly benefitting from Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s demand that full-backs push up and stay wide.
Nemanja Matic 7 – One of his best performances this season. Looked in tune with the game. United’s new tendency to press under Solskjaer has taken pressure off him defensively and given him better places from which to use the ball. Scored his first goal of the season from a corner.
Fred 6 – Looked a lot happier on the pitch, moving the ball around enthusiastically and with precision, but occasionally struggled with pressing. Taken off shortly after half time.
Paul Pogba 8 – Jose Mourinho considered the Frenchman to be a ‘virus’, but against Huddersfield he felt more like a cure. Played with imagination, drive, skill, precision, dictating the pace of play in the final third. That he was in position to score two beautiful curling goals into the bottom corner within ten minutes shows how Solskjaer’s arrival has liberated him. A weight has been lifted.
Jesse Lingard 6 – Begun the game with zip and power running across the final third, but perhaps struggled for the right angles coming in from the left hand side – a position he has never really played in.
Juan Mata 7 – Such an elegant player. Moved the ball with such control and knowledge of what surrounded him, playing a vital role in United’s second.
Marcus Rashford 7 – Delivered another classic striker’s performance: full of pace, aggressive, always looking to burst in behind, linking up with teammates, even getting a bit angry every now and again. Deserved an assist for his cross to Dalot in the first half.
