Antonio Conte has turned down the chance to manage Real Madrid because he wants to replace Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, according to reports from Italy.
The Italian won the Premier League with Chelsea in his opening campaign and bested Mourinho in the FA Cup final last season, but still lost his job after finishing fifth in the table.
He was the frontrunner to replace Julen Lopetegui but has withdrawn due to doubts over how much control over the team he would have, especially with senior players like Sergio Ramos opposed to his appointment.
And according to Italian media outlet Gazetta dello Sport, Conte favours the prospect of completing a move to Old Trafford instead once Mourinho is dismissed.
Conte resembles United’s current manager insofar as his trophies, rather than any particular playing style, are what stand out. Supporters want a manager who brings a vision, a sense of endeavour on the pitch, and they would not get that with the Italian.
Then again, his successful relationship with Paul Pogba at Juventus could be key to getting the best out of United’s talisman on a more regular basis. And he did, despite his critics, win two major trophies in as many seasons in England.
He would certainly serve as a polarising choice if he were appointed to the Old Trafford hot-seat.
