Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is reportedly eyeing a bargain deal for Toby Alderweireld this winter after being spotted watching the Belgian international side during the current international break.
The Portuguese manager was keen on signing the Tottenham man last summer but a deal couldn’t be struck with vice-executive chairman Ed Woodward apparently refusing to spend big on an ageing star.
However, Mourinho is said to still be looking for defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window and wants to finally get his hands on the Belgian.
Alderweireld didn’t appear too eager to deny any interest in a potential move to Old Trafford so a transfer could still happen if Woodward can get over the financial hiccup.
United’s poor start to the season has largely been down to a leaky defence and if the issue isn’t addressed soon then they will miss out on their targets for the season.
According to Evening Standard, Toby is available next summer for £25.4m and so Ed could use that to strike a cheap deal in the January transfer window.
The previous figure in the summer was closer to the £100m mark so it should be an easier deal to make now especially since there’s now leverage.
