Mourinho confirms De Gea wants to stay, massive boost for United's future

Jose Mourinho stated after Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Young Boys that he knew David de Gea wanted to stay at the club.

The Spaniard once again saved his side’s skin with the scores at 0-0, somehow clawing out a deflected shot which had gone past him.

Reports from the Telegraph over the last month have suggested that De Gea, whose contract expires at the end of next season, was reluctant to commit his future at Old Trafford amid uncertainty over the club’s capacity to compete for major trophies.

But the 55-year-old, speaking after the game, stressed he personally knew that both De Gea and his agent were in favour of staying at Man United on a long term basis.

De Gea is not just vital to United because of the galvanising impact his interventions have on games – as was once again the case against Young Boys – but more because, speaking more broadly, he is the sole world class player in this team.

There was a time when United were a world class team with a world class manager. Now, however, they are a world class marketing outfit with a manager who was once world class, blessed with one – just one – truly world class player: De Gea.

Losing him, therefore, would be a symbolic as well as practical blow to United. What he has given to supporters and his teammates in the post-Ferguson is unimaginably valuable. The club should give him whatever he wants.
