Fred’s agent and former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva is confident his client will eventually come good at Manchester United.
The Brazilian, signed for £52.7m from Shakhtar Donetsk over the summer, has made a slow start to life at Old Trafford.
He has only made four starts in all competitions since the end of August, prompting many to wonder whether Mourinho no longer trusts him.
But Silva, speaking over the weekend, was adamant that Mourinho was merely allowing him time to adapt to life in the Premier League.
“I am confident he will do well at United,” he said.
“He is a strong character and he has shown that in the past. There is a huge difference between life in Brazil and in the Ukraine but Fred adapted well. He will also adapt at Old Trafford in time.
“I speak with him regularly and it was always his wish to come to England if he left the Ukraine.”
“It takes time to get used to football in England. It was hard for me when I first came to Arsenal from Brazil. Everything is different. The pace and the tempo of game. The intensity. It is so different to Brazil.
“For Fred, it will also be different than in the Ukraine.”
Considering Fred’s last club was technically based in an actual war-zone, with pro-Russian separatists engaged in armed conflict against the Ukrainian government, it is unlikely his slow start is because of the Manchester rain.
What Fred needs – like any new arrival to the Premier League, really – is rhythm. Rhythm with your teammates. Rhythm with the pace of each game. A week-by-week rhythm whereby you can perform at the same level in the Premier League each week, and not get injured.
At the moment, Fred is miles away from that. But these things require patience: Victor Lindelof, after all, is only just starting to look properly comfortable in a United shirt. We may have to accept a similar period of adaptation with Fred, whose move from Ukrainian football to the Premier League is no easy jump.
