Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has agreed to extend his contract at the club by 12 months.
Spanish outlet Sport, based in Catalonia, presents an interesting report regarding De Gea’s future at the club.
Man United have always had the option to trigger a one-year extension in De Gea’s contract at Old Trafford. However, Sport claims (via Sport Witness) that this was only possible if the extension was agreed to by De Gea and his agent Jorge Mendes.
They suggest that De Gea has agreed to allow United to extend his deal by 12 months. That doesn’t mean the Spaniard has signed a new contract at the club, but they indicate that it means he is happy in Manchester.
The 27-year-old is reportedly happy with the support from the United fans, who stuck by him through early mistakes and through a failed move to Real Madrid. He’s one of the most-loved players in the team, and appreciates that.
De Gea was always going to see his contract extended, and it’s likely that this was merely a formality, if it’s true that he had to agree to it.
Having made more than 300 appearances for the club, he was never going to refuse and look for a transfer away in controversial circumstances. That’s not in his character.
