Paul Pogba has explained that he is desperate to win the UEFA Champions League as a player before he retires.
Though only 25, Pogba’s chances of winning Europe’s elite club competition currently seem slim because of Manchester United’s recent woeful displays on the continent.
Pogba returned to Man United in a record-breaking transfer back in August 2016 and the Reds haven’t made so much as a stab at winning the Champions League since.
He’s recently been linked with a move away from Old Trafford with interest from perennial challengers for the tournament – Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona.
Pogba, while in conversation with French outlet RMC (as per Get French Football News) described the Champions League as “a trophy I think about, I always have it in mind.”
The Frenchman has often referred to the Balon d’Or as an individual prize that he wants to win one day. He’s a hugely ambitious player, unsurprisingly.
Significantly, though, it’s a reminder that if Man United do not begin challenging for trophies like the Champions League then players will leave, including Pogba.
That could start a vicious cycle whereby United cannot sign players of Pogba’s reputation and talent and therefore cannot challenge for the top trophies. Liverpool, United’s rivals, have only just begun to escape that cycle after many years of being stuck in it.
