Southgate explains why Rashford will be a big player for England

England manager Gareth Southgate has refused to criticise Marcus Rashford for his performance vs Croatia despite the nation failing to win the fixture.

It was a tight match between the two countries but the Three Lions’ best chances fell to the Manchester United man.

Unfortunately for Rashford he failed to convert which naturally upset the England supporters who thought he should’ve done better.

Southgate though was simply pleased the youngster got in such dangerous positions in the first place and praised his players instead.

Marcus himself wouldn’t have been happy he wasn’t clinical on the day but there will be plenty more opportunities to convert in the future.

According to FourFourTwo, Gareth said: “I was really pleased he was in the areas to get those chances and his general performance as the game went on, he looked more and more of a threat.

“He scored twice for us last month [against Spain and Switzerland] and we love him to bits, so he’ll take more of those chances than not.

“The more important thing for me is we’ve created good chances and the likes of Marcus, Harry [Kane] and Raheem [Sterling], the forwards we’ve got, they’ll finish them. We’ve just got to make sure we’re creating them.”

The United academy product is absolutely outstanding in training and it’s only a matter of time before he reproduces that in competitive football.

Rashford doesn’t often get criticised for any aspect of his game other than his finishing and he will certainly have to step it up if he hopes to be a striker.

His dribbling and pace always make him a deadly prospect but he will continue to be shoved out wide if he doesn’t prove to be clinical on a regular basis.

Marcus is unfortunately competing with more established strikers in Romelu Lukaku and Harry Kane for club and country but he could force his way into his respective manager’s plans.
