Michael Carrick explains why supporters should back Jose Mourinho

Manchester United coach Michael Carrick believes supporters should back Jose Mourinho because he respects the club’s traditions.

The Englishman retired last season but joined the Portuguese’s backroom staff as he aims to become a manager himself one day.

United have a history of producing their own talent and Mourinho has a reputation of only working with ready made stars.

However, Carrick feels it’s simply not true of the former Chelsea boss and fans can look to Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay as examples.

Jose has also made numerous long terms signings at Old Trafford such as Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof and Diogo Dalot.

According to Give Me Sport, Michael said to Sky Sports: “He does get the history. For the manager to put [Rashford] in and play him and Scott [McTominay] last year, and give them games – big games as well.

“The manager has to take a lot of credit for that. That’s the constant challenge though, isn’t it? That’s what everyone wants to see, that next one.

“They say it’s getting harder. But that’s a challenge for us as a club and for English football – you might not get tens and twenties, you might get five or six players – but it’s got to keep happening.”

Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku are also players who were considered to be on the ‘young’ spectrum when they initially joined.

Mourinho has also been said to have been impressed with the club’s youngsters and is simply waiting for an opportunity to call upon them.

Unfortunately for them, Manchester United have plenty of competition in most areas of the pitch.

In some areas, such as the centre-back position, they are even overstocked though there’s an obvious lack of quality.

Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly, Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof are all competing for just two spots in the starting XI.
