Former-Manchester United striker Lee Sharpe has slammed current forward Romelu Lukaku.
The Belgian is coming under severe scrutiny for his recent performances. After a good first season at Man United, in which he scored more than 25 goals, Lukaku has not progressed.
His first touch remains a significant weakness and he has netted only four times this season. It’s quite clear that he is so far off the leading strikers in the Premier League and Champions League, like Sergio Agüero or Harry Kane, that he may never reach their level.
Lukaku’s form is a huge concern to United and manager Jose Mourinho. Sharpe believes United fans are seeing a striker with a uniquely poor attribute.
“I’ve never seen a centre forward with such a bad touch,” Sharpe told talkSPORT.
“If your centre forward can’t hold the ball up, it makes it a very hard game.”
Lukaku is immensely strong and is a good striker. He’s not a great one, though. Of course, this may simply be a spell of bad form and Sharpe has suggested giving the former-Everton man a rest after his exploits for the Belgian national team at the summer’s World Cup.
“He’s saying he’s played a lot of football at the World Cup and since and that he’s feeling it,” Sharpe continued.
“I think the best thing would be to give him a rest. Send him off on holiday for a couple of weeks.”
It’s not really a period where United can afford to have a mis-firing striker. They have already had games against Chelsea and Juventus, neither of which Lukaku scored in.
Furthermore, they must now take on Juventus once more as well as Manchester CIty.
Lukaku is set to face his former club, Everton, on Sunday in the Premier League and hopefully he can get back on track there.
