Paul Scholes claims that Marcus Rashford was the only Manchester United player who deserves praise after the club’s 0-0 draw with struggling La Liga side Valencia in the UEFA Champions League.
The young English forward started on the left flank for Man United, but was later moved to the right wing after the introduction of Anthony Martial in the second half.
Rashford hit the crossbar with a fantastic whipped free-kick and had another few chances come close. His pace and attacking threat was starkly contrasting to that of striker Romelu Lukaku, who looked static throughout the 90 minutes.
Scholes hailed Rashford’s effort and performance in a game which couldn’t ease the pressure on United in a tough time for the Reds.
“He was the one player who actually fought and felt, and had a little bit of anger inside of him,” Scholes told BT Sport. “He wanted to do something. I hope he now gets a run of games in the team.”
“It took one of the younger players to come out and do that [play with no fear].”
Rashford deserves a run of games, and it looks like he may get that under Jose Mourinho now. Alexis Sanchez was hooked in the second half at Old Trafford, replaced by Martial. The Chilean was also dropped from the matchday squad for Saturday’s humiliating 3-1 defeat against West Ham United, where Rashford netted United’s only goal as a substitute.
The 20-year-old is in decent form and looks far more threatening than Lukaku or Sanchez. Mourinho has to keep him in the side. He gives United more penetration than others players and a higher intensity.
