David de Gea 6 – Had hardly anything of note to contend with. Kicking was slightly off.
Antonio Valencia 5 – The Ecuadorian is a player who has won the hearts of supporters in recent years but tonight once again showed why Diogo Dalot needs to come in. Found himself constantly exposed by Valencia’s pace – especially Goncalo Guedes – and was not a threat in attack.
Eric Bailly 6 – Positioning was nowhere near tight enough at the start, with Bailly often affording players like Guedes and Rodrigo too much space in front of him, but the Ivorian did improve in the second half.
Chris Smalling 7 – Once again a very quietly accomplished leader from Smalling, who bossed around a nervous back-line all game. Dominant in the air.
Luke Shaw 6 – Could have produced more end product in attack but, once again, displayed the kind of attitude which explains why he is back in the starting XI.
Nemanja Matic 5 – Looked drastically off the pace at times, turning slowly and passing inaccurately, and did little to thwart Valencia’s momentum.
Marouane Fellaini 5 – Offered a useful physical presence as United attacked more after half time but, on a night where the home side needed to play with pace, often felt clunky on the ball.
Paul Pogba 5 – Another frustrating evening for the Frenchman. Without movement ahead of him he drifted into making silly mistakes on the ball too often. Lacked final product in the last third.
Alexis Sanchez 5 – It was not for the want of trying but Sanchez, once again, looked like a stranger to his teammates out wide. Seeing him like this is depressing to say the least.
Marcus Rashford 6 – Set pieces were once again awful but, at the very least, this was a performance packed with incentive and power. Bombed forward with intent and got in the box whenever he could.
Romelu Lukaku 5 – This was not the Lukaku of last season: lacking movement, both in the box and when it was in midfield, and largely disconnected from United’s performance.
