Jose Mourinho has stressed his delight at Paul Pogba’s mental approach during Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Everton.
The Frenchman, using his trademark run-up, saw his penalty saved by Jordan Pickford but tapped home the rebound to give Man United the lead. He was later criticised for losing the ball in the lead-up to Everton’s goal.
At the same time, Pogba was a talismanic influence down the middle, sustaining pressure on Everton’s defence and laying on a perfect assist for Anthony Martial.
Speaking after the game, Mourinho refused to criticise the Frenchman, insisting his mental attitude was superb.
Mourinho:
"Pogba is a better penalty taker than myself.. I admire players who have the courage to take them.
"He wants to take them. Maybe he has to change his approach but I don't want him to change his mental approach."

Pogba brings an element chaos to a football pitch. And sometimes that can be bad, like with his error in the middle, but more often than not the 25-year-old produces startlingly brilliant, decisive, beautiful footballing chaos which brings supporters off their seats and puts his team in control. He can be an exhibition to watch.
And that was also on show against Everton. From the moment the second half started Pogba had the ball at his feet and was endlessly driving forward, shaping the very feel of the game as he did so. Players of his size – both physically and metaphorically – are never too far away from the ball, their personalties directly impacting on the game, and perhaps we just have to accept that such brilliant innovation sometimes comes at a cost.
