Manchester United are set to restart contract talks with attacking midfielder Juan Mata in the coming weeks.
The Spaniard’s current deal at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season and due to his age, Mata will be able and free to speak to foreign clubs in January about joining them once the season concludes.
Mata joined Man United in January 2014 as a club record signing from Chelsea during David Moyes’ time as manager at the club.
While he has not hit the consistent heights he managed at Chelsea, he has contributed vital goals for United frequently. The latest of such was a superb free-kick to spark an epic 3-2 comeback against Newcastle United last Saturday.
Now 30, United want to keep Mata at the club according to The Sun and the player is also interested in extending his contract.
It had seemed possible that Mata’s United career would be short-lived when Jose Mourinho arrived as manager in July 2016 with the Portuguese having sold him as Chelsea boss just two years previous. However, he has proved an important player at times under Mourinho, even if he has rarely been in the team of late.
The Sun reports that United are eager to tie Mata down before the player can discuss terms with other clubs in January. It is expected the Reds will sit down with Mata and his father in the coming weeks to fend off interest from former club Valencia and other interested parties like Barcelona.
