Manchester United are unlikely to appoint the club’s first-ever sporting director until Jose Mourinho leaves his role as manager.
Sportsmail reports that the Reds have no intention of filling any such role in the immediate future and will not do so until there is a change of manager at Old Trafford.
Names such as Fabio Paratici of Juventus, Andrea Berta of Atletico Madrid and AS Roma’s Monchi have all been linked with a role at Man United. Many reports since August have indicated a desire at the club to find a technical director, a previously non-existent role, to help build a buffer between Mourinho and the board.
However, the Mail reports that there are no plans to change the club’s structure during Mourinho’s tenure, or at least not during this season.
It’s thought that upheaval internally would only add to the issues at United thus far this season as Mourinho saw his side lose three of their opening seven Premier League fixtures.
Ed Woodward is not necessarily focused on appointing a figure like Monchi or Berta or Paratici, though. The Mail suggests that Woodward wants to appoint someone who is already working at the club to a new role.
There are a number of staff at United who are filling the duties of a technical director role without the title, and Woodward could look at them.
An internal appointment seems classic of Woodward. While reports of a search for a technical director are positive, the fact that banker and accountant Woodward is selecting them is worrying.
