Eric Cantona explains who Man United should appoint to replace Mourinho

Eric Cantona has insisted that Manchester United should appoint a former-player to become manager when current boss Jose Mourinho leaves or is sacked.

The former-striker is not a fan of Mourinho’s and has criticised the style of play he has put in place at Old Trafford. Cantona has also spoken about becoming Man United manager himself, although claimed that was not his intention with his recent comments.

A number of ex-United players have gone on to be managers. That includes Laurent Blanc, Ryan Giggs, Steve Bruce, Roy Keane and Gary Neville among many, many others. Sir Alex Ferguson’s players have a tendency to go into management.

Cantona believes that one of those former-players should be given the United job once Mourinho is gone, something which the club have never chosen to do in the recent past.

“At United, they never give a chance to a player who knows the club from the inside, who knows the identity and philosophy of the club,” Cantona explained at an event, as per The Republik of Mancunia.

“I don’t want people to think I’m saying this because I want to be manager of Manchester United. It’s just the truth.

“[Ryan] Giggs? Any player who wants to be the manager they should give them the chance.”

Giggs managed United on a temporary basis in 2014 after David Moyes was sacked. He had to wait until this year to land his first permanent managerial role, with the Welsh national team, the country of his birth.

He’d be a possibility, but what is really needed at United is an overhaul of the priorities at board level and the personnel at the top of the club. A simple change in manager will not lead to a reversal of the club’s fortunes.
