Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has decided to stick with manager Jose Mourinho despite four games without a win for the Reds.
Mourinho oversaw a 0-0 bore draw against struggling La Liga side Valencia in the UEFA Champions League, a result that followed a humiliating 3-1 defeat to West Ham United, being knocked out of the League Cup by Derby County and another dull draw at home against Wolves before that.
It’s almost two months since Man United won at Old Trafford. But Woodward is sticking with Mourinho for now, according to The Independent.
The United chief has decided that no change will be made yet. It’s not surprising. Woodward handed Mourinho a new contract in January of this year. He appointed Mourinho.
To sack him would mean yet another poor appointment or signing by Ed Woodward. David Moyes was sacked after eight months. Louis van Gaal after two seasons. Sacking Mourinho would prove the point of those who say that United are failing because of Woodward.
Some fans who have stuck loyally with Mourinho through a bad season last year are now starting to turn against the Portuguese. Yet support for Mourinho to turn things around remains at Old Trafford. The United faithful want to see Mourinho turn things round at United, not necessarily another manager do so yet.
Zinedine Zidane, Mauricio Pochettino and Ryan Giggs have all been mentioned as possible replacements. So, too, has former-Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, who replaced Mourinho at the London club.
Pochettino would not be available until the end of the season, if at all. Zidane would be available now.
