Marouane Fellaini has revealed the reason behind Manchester United’s team huddle before Tuesday evening’s 0-0 draw against Valencia in the UEFA Champions Legaue.
The Belgian started for the Reds in a fourth consecutive game without a win. Going into the fixture at Old Trafford, United had drawn to Wolves and lost to Derby County and West Ham United.
Chances were rare against Valencia and so one notable moment was seen as the team huddle by Man United before kick-off, something which is rare for the team.
United very rarely get into a huddle before kick-off but that was the case on Tuesday and Fellaini revealed why it happened.
“Everybody [wanted to do it]. I think everybody is behind the manager,” Fellaini said, indicating it was a gesture of support for under-fire boss Jose Mourinho.
“We have to do our best and do our job. We showed it today but we have to do better [against Newcastle] on Saturday.
“Everyone is going in the same direction to try to improve and to do better. I think we wanted to show that we are together.”
It was a good idea from the squad. While only performances will get United out of this run of poor performances, the mood can be slightly improved by actions like a team huddle, where it seems like a united squad behind their manager.
Other gestures, like Fellaini’s midfield teammate Paul Pogba telling reporters that he’s not “allowed” to speak to them, or Antonio Valencia liking an Instagram post which called for Mourinho to be sacked, show less unity.
Less words need to be spoken, and more unity shown on the pitch.
