Six reasons why Maurizio Sarri will win trophies at Chelsea

How important is The Beautiful Game when you cannot win? For years, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger struggled with this question. Likewise, Liverpool’s Klopp and Spurs’ Pochetino are challenging the same question now.

Even as the majority of teams navigate towards the financially lucrative path of entertainment, the demand for success remains deeply ingrained in the game. Many fans, like him or not, would still take Mourinho’s “19th-century football” as long as the stream of laurels flows.

This summer, new Chelsea manager Sarri was hired (and his predecessor Conte abruptly fired!) with one important detail in mind: Sarri-ball – a trademark brand of football associated with the former Napoli boss that combines intricate passing with relentless pressing. Similar to the system deployed at the likes of Barcelona and Manchester City, Sarri-ball can be hard to contend with and can entertain a team’s fans just as much as it bores the opposition who are so starved of possession. But make no mistake about it, Sarri was not signed up just to pass. He is also expected to win. Fail to do so and not even his ambrosia of soccer will spare him too long in West London.

Why do I suspect he will succeed? Here are six reasons.

1) Italian Manager

Chelsea certainly have a charm with Italian managers. Vialli, Ranieri, Ancelotti, Di Matteo and Conte all attained different levels of success at the club despite not lasting the mile. Moreover, the successes of Ranieri and Mancini at Leicester City and Manchester City tells you that the Italians bring much more than pizza to the game. There is simply no reason why Sarri would be different. It just depends on how much patience is required from the club (and whether they are willing to give it).

2) Better Quality Players

With the exception of Gonzalo Higuain, and, perhaps, Pepe Reina, none of the players inherited or acquired by Sarri at Napoli had what could be considered as an intimidating profile. He literally had to forge steel into silver. Even then, he had to contest with selling off Higuain to – guess who – Juventus, with only the soon-to-be injured Arkadiusz Milik brought in from Ajax as a replacement. Despite this, Sarri’s team still managed to be very competitive, especially domestically.

At Chelsea, he’s working with top quality players, many of whom are coveted by the best teams in Europe. So whereas he had to both develop the players and teach the style at Napoli, at Chelsea he can focus more on the style.

3) A Team Of Champions

Chelsea’s dressing room is not just a hub of experienced, skilful players, but also the convergence of winners. The most successful English club (thanks to the Abramovic Era), a lot of champions remain. The last two seasons alone have yielded two major trophies. Two league titles in the last four seasons also underscore the point. There are more than a few players who can step up to help the boss over the line when the chips are down. There is something about that winning mentality that sticks with you – the absence of which you suffer from. When you have it, it is easy to maintain. When you’ve lost it for long, it is harder to recover. Ask Spurs and Liverpool.

4) The Big Elephant In The Room

It is simply amazing when you can garner a whopping 91 league points – even beating the would-be champions in their backyard at the tail end of the season – without taking home the title. The fate Sarri had to endure in Italian football as his side trailed the Old Lady year after year. The quality of Juventus (and power of Bianconeri to make other teams roll over) is so formidable compared to other Calcio teams that no one seems anywhere near capable of stopping them. At Chelsea, Sarri has Guardiola’s Man City to contend with, as well as a trophy-shy – but menacing – Liverpool, among others. The difference is that in England the competition is fierce; it’s anyone’s game. A (dis- or perhaps an) advantage that could work in Sarri’s favour.

5) Point To Prove

In my opinion, Sarri’s trophyless spell at Napoli is not narrated in context. Many prefer to see a man who won nothing, but the reality is that Sarri performed wonders at Napoli, given both the competition and the resources available. Pep Guardiola, who plays a similar way, started off at FC Barcelona and went on to a hyper-dominant Bayern Munich, followed by a super-rich Man City where he took time and enormous spending to tailor his team’s success. Chelsea is Sarri’s first truly big platform, one with the resources that afford him the opportunity to prove that he too is a winner.

6) Good Start

A good start does not guarantee success, but given where Chelsea were last season in terms of self-belief one can imagine that the way the season has progressed will bring back that feeling of “We are Chelsea; We can beat anyone.” Four wins in four clearly sets the tone for a competitive campaign, especially given their reputation for early wins setting their seasonal precedent. There are still problems of porosity and profligacy in both boxes but even those should be ironed out soon. The Community Shield defeat to a perfected Manchester City has already spotlighted the perceived lack of trophy winnings for Sarri, but even that must be read in context. By the time Chelsea take on City in a December league fixture, the scales may be slightly more even, given the remarkable progress already seen.
